The Riverside Church has been a presence in the Riverside community since 1885. At that time, Sunday School classes were started in the old Pier School on Pier Road and held there until 1890.
When Annie Lee Eberhart came to live in Riverside in 1903, Sunday School was held in the Town Hall every Sunday afternoon. Preaching Services, as they were called at the time, began at 3pm and were widely attended. Although the Pastor was paid only $50 a year, there was difficulty in raising his salary.
During Reverend Dwight Rood's pastorate, the Riverside Post Office burned down. Salvaged items, including fixtures, were stored in the Town Hall making the room very crowded. Following Reverend Rood was Reverend McDonald. During his tenure, the Ladies Aid was founded by Mrs. Barnes, Mrs. Hamilton, Mrs. Belcher, and Mrs. Simonson.
When the Town Hall burned in 1914 (it was rebuilt at a later date) the services were moved to the Cooper shop. After a time, that building was required for other purposes. Mrs. Eberhart, the Sunday School Superintendent, was told by the pastor at that time, Reverend Blewfield, to find another place in which to hold services. Riverside School No. 6 was permitted to hold services and on that first Sunday, although it was a dreadfully cold and windy day, thirteen individuals turned out. The following Sunday, and throughout the entire summer, services were held in the open air under the cherry trees at the home of Mr. & Mrs. John Elston. It did not rain one Sunday afternoon during the entire season of outdoor services! A chair was used by the Superintendent to stand on.
A meeting was held in the Town Hall by a number of area citizens who were interested in seeing a church established in Riverside. A motion was made - and carried - that the offer of the Clymer church be accepted. The church, moved on a specially made truck, took several months; the trip began in 1914 and the church arrived in 1915. The move cost $300. The land in which the church was situated was donated by Mr. & Mrs. John Elston. Reverend Blewfield was not only a minister, but also a carpenter and fundraiser! He was able to raise money for church repairs and then complete them himself!
The first service in the church was held two weeks before Thanksgiving in 1915.
At its present location, the Fellowship Hall, bell tower, and kitchen were part of the original build in 1968. In 2000, the sanctuary was added increasing the square footage of the church. The outdoor Pavilion was added in 2002.
